Something strange happens when you grow up in the middle of nowhere.

The roads are straight. The skies go on forever. You're shaped by what's around you — unless you find a way out.

The internet was the way out. Mid-2000s music blogs, Hype Machine, Alt Nation on XM. Hours spent finding sounds that didn't exist anywhere nearby.

Dance music was part of it. Extended mixes. Artists no one around him knew. A whole genre he'd never have found otherwise.

At 17, he started DJing. Open-format sets, reading rooms, playing what connected. Years of it — learning the difference between music that's interesting and music that moves people.

Eventually, playing other people's records wasn't enough.

So he started making his own.
